Below I have a guide on how to make your own flyers from Canva templates and from scratch. I have also created a few templates you can use – you can edit the details and use these as a base template. Simply make a copy of the template you like and then make your changes.

To make your own from a template
Click on the “+” button to make a new project. Note that the “Canva AI” (and when a prompt says “ask canva”) is using their AI tool – so any flyers made using that will not be published on this website or in our newsletters (as per the AI policy)

To make a flyer, type “flyer” into the template search box and choose the portrait template

You can use one of their design templates as a base for your design. Search for a term you want (I searched “purple). Note that anything with a crown icon on it is one of the paid features so you can’t use it in a free account. But there are free elements you can pick from (they just aren’t always as fancy)

See how the free ones don’t have the crown

If you see a template you want to use, click it and it’ll open up for you to make your modifications. You can remove things you don’t like, change the position of things by clicking them and dragging them (you can even rotate them), and you can add extra elements you want too. Play around and see what you can do.

If you make a mistake, you can “undo” with the backward arrow.

You can add your own elements to a template to make it more unique to your event – like here I changed the text on the template and added a high tea image.

When designing, the document will show pink lines at the centre points and when elements are balanced. A solid line means it’s exactly in the centre. A broken line can show when it’s centred to other elements.

When you see numbers in pink, it’s to help show that things are evenly spaced (or not)

You can use the “position” option to change which layers are higher up than others – so that overlapping elements are displaying how you want them to. Eg these stars should be dragged downwards so they are underneath the writing not on top of it.

If you want to have a subtle design in the background that isn’t too bold – you can adjust the transparency to make it more transparent and more muted. You can see here I’ve used a flower design here that is too vibrant at full opacity and you can’t read the writing.

But if I change the transparency to 18 we get a nice subtle effect

How to download your flyer
Click on the “Share” and select “download”

You can select to change to a pdf, png (image) or jpg (image) – you can download the same flyer in both a png and a pdf if you want. A pdf is best for emailing.

Making your own from scratch.
To change the background colour, click it then the colour wheel and choose whatever colour you want.

If you want to change the style of the text highlight the text box, then select “effects”

You can curve text and add shadows and such

If you want to add some cliparts, pictures, corners and other things, click on the “elements” and type in what you’re looking for, then click them to add them to your design. You can duplicate, rotate and flip these too.

Remember that “ask canva” option is using their AI
You can keep working on it until you have a design you like
