While we don’t like to think of anything unfortunate happening at a Hatting event, it is a good idea to make sure that if something did happen where a Hatter is unable to contact their partner/family, then someone (like the Chapter Queen) has those details.

Queens may like to keep a list of emergency contacts with their Chapter information, but if the Hatter is at an event where the Queen isn’t attending, or didn’t bring the contact details, then having another way to access the emergency contact information is important.

There are 2 ways that emergency contact info can be easily accessible by other Hatters at an event if needed.

1). Having a sticker on the back of your name badge.
2). Adding an Emergency Contact to your mobile phone’s lock screen

Name badge

A common suggestion is to put your emergency contact information on the back of your name badge. That way it’s always on you, and easy for fellow Hatters to find in an emergency. Depending on your badge, you might be able to write the details on with a permanent pen, or you could write it on a small piece of paper and glue it on.

Chapters may like to download a sheet of labels in 3 sizes to give out to members. These can either be printed on sticker paper, or printed on regular paper and then glued or taped onto the back of the badges.

Phone Contact

Mobile phones have an emergency contact setting that allows the contact to be called while the phone is in the locked state without needing the password to unlock the phone. But this option is not set up by default, you have to do it yourself.

For an android (non-iphone) phone:
1). Go to Settings
2). At the top in the search bar, type “emergency”
3). click on the “emergency contacts” option.
4). You’ll see if you have any of your phone contacts set as emergency contacts if there are numbers listed there, if there’s nothing there, press the + to add contact, and select your desired emergency contact people.

To access this emergency contact on an android phone that has it set up, if you swipe the lockscreen you’ll see “emergency” under the keypad.  Click that and a button up the top “emergency information” will then show the numbers you can call while the phone is still locked.

For an iphone:
You will need to set up your Medical ID.

  1. Go to the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your picture at the top right, then tap Medical ID.
  3. Tap Get Started or Edit, then enter your information.
  4. Below Emergency Contacts, tap Add Emergency Contact, then add your contacts. After an emergency call ends, your iPhone alerts your emergency contacts with a text message, unless you choose to cancel. Your iPhone sends your current location (if available) and—for a period of time after you enter SOS mode—your emergency contacts receive updates when your location changes.
  5. Tap Done.

To view your Medical ID from the Home Screen, touch and hold the Health app icon, then choose Medical ID.
